AU 2025 Recap: Embracing a New Era of Making

As a Civil 3D enthusiast, I often forget about the wonderful and wacky breadth of AutoCAD commands that I used to frequently use. Here's some of my favourites:

#### ID
This command will display the coordinates (X, Y, and Z) at the point that the user specifies. This is especially useful for civil engineers and architects who want to review the precise locations of model objects. A neat trick of this command is that the point that is ID'd will be saved a last point and can be referenced with the @ sign at the next command that requires a point. 

#### TXT2MTEXT
Converts single line text objects to multiline text. Good gravy is that useful!

#### TEXTTOFRONT
This one is easy to figure out! This command helps users move Text, Dimensions, Leader, or all the above to the front of other objects. 

#### HATCHTOBACK
Another freebie. Puts hatches in their place. 

#### -PURGE
AutoCAD users should be familiar with the purge command - it is an important tool for streamlining our project files and removing information that is not referenced or required. However by using the hyphen "-" it is possible to invoke a command in command line mode. The command line purge command has additional options that are not present in the typical purge dialog. For example, this is the method for removing registered apps from the drawing. 

#### BATTMAN
Opens the Block Attribute Manager. This command is just fun to say.

#### BURST
Speaking of blocks with attributes, this command will explode a block and importantly will preserve the block attribute values. 

#### OOPS
This is a funky command. This command is a fancy Undo button. Instead of undoing any work that you have performed, this command will undo the last Erase command performed. This can be especially helpful when creating hatches in areas with overlapping geometry. 

#### INSERT
Unveiled back in 2020, AutoCAD has changed the method for inserting blocks into drawings. The dialog box has been replaced with a all-new Block Palette. This new palette has four tabs providing users with the ability to access blocks in the current drawing, favorited blocks, block libraries, and recently used blocks. Configuring the insertion point, rotation, auto-placement, and more has never been easier than with this palette. 

#### LAYWALK
One of my favorites! This command will display a dialog box and allows you to scroll (walk) through every layer in the project drawing and isolate it in the view. This is a handy command for drawing validation and review.

#### FS
Fast Select is an interesting command that will create a selection set of all objects that touch a selected objects. This command has two settings: one mode will only select the objects that are touching the selected object, the other mode will selected all objects touching the selected object as well as any objects touching any of those object, cascading down selecting everything in contact in the chain. 

#### TIME
Our time is up here, but let's leave with one last command... TIME. This command will display the statistics of the current file including the date of creation, total editing time, and current time. If you want the most inconvenient way to check what time it is, boot up AutoCAD.

From Silos to Synergy: Why BIM-GIS Integration Matters for Infrastructure

A&E Design is an architecture and design firm with a portfolio of exciting projects, including a renovation of the Old Faithful Inn at Yellowstone National Park. 

While relatively modest in size, the company manages enormous volumes of data. To keep that data accessible to stakeholders across the state of Montana and beyond, it was paramount to minimize silos and data sprawl. 

To address this need, ARKANCE—A&E’s partner for technology solutions such as Autodesk and Bluebeam—pointed the company toward Egnyte. A&E’s subsequent adoption of Egnyte has eliminated the barriers standing in the way of their hybrid work model and enabled future growth. 


### Challenge: A&E Struggles to Access Files on Its Own Terms
With workers spread across multiple offices, enabling everyone to access and share data using A&E’s on-premises data storage platform was a major headache. The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated the problem, as many staff members began working from home, further straining the firm’s existing infrastructure. 

To connect these sites and remote workers, the firm relied heavily on VPNs. This proved unsustainable, especially for Mac users. Wesley Miller, IT Director at A&E Design, explained: “Our Branding and Marketing teams are all on Apple devices, and the VPN just wasn’t working. People kept getting frustrated trying to access their files. The issue got a lot worse during COVID when everyone went remote.” 

Sharing files under such circumstances required convoluted workarounds. With no reliable way to gain timely access over a VPN, users had to download files to their local machines to edit. Thumb drives and external hard drives were used to share exceptionally large files with consulting firms. 


### Solution: ARKANCE Brings in Egnyte’s Cloud-Hosted Platform
A&E’s technology partner ARKANCE was aware of the issues the company was facing. So when Miller reached out to his contact there about renewing A&E’s subscription to another data platform, ARKANCE recommended looking at Egnyte. “The thinking was that Egnyte had proven really successful in the AEC space, could easily meet our heavy cloud data storage needs, and was great for sharing and accessing files on any device,” Miller explains. “That made it easy to sell to my leadership team.” 

Egnyte serves as a cloud-hosted file management system that eliminates file access barriers for users in any location. In testing Egnyte, users found that they were able to open Adobe Creative Cloud files and other content directly in Egnyte and share them with internal and external stakeholders via secure links with granular access permissions. Brian Smith, Cloud Solutions Specialist at ARKANCE, elaborates on why this was so significant for A&E: “The brain of many data platforms focuses on their filers. Egnyte’s brain is in the cloud. A&E's current solution didn’t have a lot of great options for remote file access, and A&E started to feel the sting from that when they went remote during the pandemic. Egnyte is perfect for that, and for the hybrid in-office and work-from-home model A&E has now.” Critically, all file sharing now happens through Egnyte, completely eliminating the need to copy files between systems like Windows and multiple data silos—all of which were previously in use—and then having to share those files as email attachments, creating further security risks and contributing to data sprawl. 

With so many large files, Miller initially had concerns about data storage. Egnyte quickly put those concerns to bed. “We have some massive folders with huge reality capture files,” Miller says. “Egnyte just vacuums those up with no problems, and it doesn’t struggle when we transfer large data volumes.” And if any files are accidentally lost or overwritten by a user, Egnyte’s Secure and Govern tools, audit logs, and easy file search functionality quickly neutralizes the issue.

### Benefits: Seamless Collaboration from Anywhere, on Any Device

A&E set out to create a functional and reliable hybrid work model in which users could work on mission-critical files using the device of their choice. Egnyte has enabled them to achieve that goal with remarkable ease. Joe Cates, Business Line Director for Egnyte at ARKANCE, adds, “Based on the challenges A&E Design was facing, I knew that Egnyte had the right features and benefits to fit their needs. In my time working with the AEC Industry, rarely has there been a solution in the market that solves for office workers and remote workers to provide the same experience whether you are at home, in the field, or working from the office. Asked to name his favorite Egnyte feature, Wesley says: “There are a ton that I love, but if I have to name one, I’ve got to go with all-device file sharing. If someone reaches out because they’re having trouble finding a file, I can just send them a secure link instead of sending a downloaded file as an email attachment or showing them how to find the file in a letter drive they might not know how to navigate. It’s amazing how easy Egnyte’s mobile app is. I remember I was once sitting in the parking lot of a pharmacy when a colleague reached out looking for a file from a decade-old project, and I was able to pull out my phone and send it immediately on the Egnyte app, right from my car.” 


A&E’s relationship with the Egnyte team also ranks far ahead of their experience with previous data management providers. Wesley says, when working with Egnyte’s Professional Services team during their implementation: “PS knew exactly what we’d need in terms of hardware and bandwidth, and they have a great data migration tool. Once I provided what was needed, they had us up and running exactly when they said they would—no delays. All the while, communication and responsiveness were top-notch. That has been true not just of PS, but of the entire Egnyte support team. And ARKANCE was such an essential partner in finding this solution for us and connecting us with it. I’m really grateful to them for that.” 


All in all, Egnyte has changed what Wesley thought was possible with cloud-based content storage and collaboration. “I used to tell people there was no panacea for cloud-based storage in our industry. There would always be some issue with real-time file access or other details. Egnyte has shown me I was wrong. It’s the only cloud solution I’ve seen that is truly enterprise data management, that solves for people working remotely, and that is completely secure and easy to use.”

Bridging the Gap: AECO Data Management That Works

Change has always been a part of the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry. At every pivotal moment, the introduction of new technology has sparked both excitement and fear. Those of us who remember the transition from hand drafting to CAD recall the whispers of job losses, the skepticism, and the claims that the art of design would be lost. Yet, despite the uncertainty, we adapted. New roles emerged, skills evolved, and our industry grew.

**A Personal Journey Through Change** 
I remember working for a local Architect named Grover Tayler. He worked out of his house, a garage converted into a design studio and hired me to convert select projects to AutoCAD. Most of the time, I worked alongside him on the board, hand drafting projects. Occasionally, I converted select designs to AutoCAD. During that time, I remember listening to people in the industry, reading printed articles warning that CAD would take our jobs. I didn’t think much of it because I learned AutoCAD and board drafting around the same time.

But as the years passed, AutoCAD became an industry titan, and parametric modeling entered the architectural space. Suddenly, I was feeling a bit of déjà vu. CAD drafters and CAD managers began to say, "BIM is going to take our jobs." Today, Revit is the industry standard for many. And now, with AI developing at an unprecedented rate, I once again hear familiar voices: "AI is going to take our jobs!"
But here’s the reality…we’ve been here before.

**A Revolution in the 1980s** 
The 1980s marked a significant shift with the introduction of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. AutoCAD, launched in 1982, revolutionized the architectural industry by transitioning design processes from manual drafting boards to digital platforms. 

This transformation led to the evolution of roles:
- Draftsmen transitioned into CAD Technicians or CAD Operators, acquiring skills to produce digital drawings.
- Designers and Engineers integrated CAD tools into their workflows, enhancing precision and efficiency.
- CAD Managers emerged to oversee CAD standards, manage digital libraries, and ensure quality control.

While some manual drafting positions diminished, the industry saw an overall growth in productivity and the creation of new job opportunities.

**Transforming the Industry in the 2000s** 
Building Information Modeling (BIM) began gaining traction in the 1990s, with tools like ArchiCAD and Revit leading the way. However, it wasn't until the 2000s that BIM truly became mainstream. This shift brought about new roles and transformed existing ones:

Yes, some tasks may change. Yes, some roles may evolve. But we have always been an industry that adapts, learns, and thrives. We are the dreamers who shape skylines, the problem-solvers who build communities, and the innovators who never stop moving forward.
